Every year, over 150,000 foreign workers enter Canada to work temporarily in jobs that help Canadian employers address skill shortages, or to work as live-in caregivers. A work permit is needed for most temporary jobs in Canada. Some jobs do not require a work permit. If you intend to work in the province of Quebec, you must obtain a certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) before a work permit can be issued. Some temporary workers require a work permit and some do not. For some categories of workers, permits are approved more quickly. The requirements and processing times depend on the sort of work you will do when you come to Canada. Your knowledge and skills are welcome in our schools. The provinces regulate education and schools in Canada. For more detailed information on living and studying in a specific province or territory, contact the school where you wish to study. To study in Canada, you may need a study permit or a temporary resident visa, though not everyone must have these documents. Before you can apply for a study permit, you must have been accepted at a recognized school, university or college in Canada. You can find information on how to choose a school, college or university in the Related Links section at the bottom of this page. In most cases, you must obtain a study permit if you want to study in Canada. To be eligible to study in Canada: You must have been accepted by a school, college, university or other educational institution in Canada. You must prove that you have enough money to pay for your: tuition fees living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada and return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada. You must be a law-abiding citizen with no criminal record and not be a risk to the security of Canada. You may have to provide a police certificate. You must be in good health and willing to complete a medical examination, if necessary. You must satisfy an immigration officer that you will leave Canada when you have completed your studies. In some cases, you do not require a study permit to go to school in Canada. IF YOU WISH TO STUDY IN A SHORT-TERM COURSE OR PROGRAM You do not need a study permit if you plan to take a course or program in Canada that lasts six months or less. IRB is an independent board that is responsible for handling these refugee-related issues. Besides, it determines who is aConvention refugeeand who is aperson in need of protection. Convention refugee:people who live outside their home country and aren’t able to return because of a well-founded fear of oppression based on their race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a certain social group are known as convention refugees. Person in need of protection: Foreign national, who lives in Canada and aren’t able to go back to his/her home country because of the risk of torture, losing a life, or facing any unusual or cruel punishment is called person in need of protection. You know you are eligible to make a refugee claim if: No other country has already recognized you as a Convention refugee. You haven’t yet gained the protected person status in Canada. You didn’t enter Canada via the Canada-United States border (as per Safe Third Country Agreement). You don’t have any previous criminal records. You don’t have any previous refugee claim, which was rejected by the IRB or found not eligible. You are not under a removal order Resettlement from outside Canada Bringing refugees in Canada from outside the country is known as resettlement. In order to come to Canada as a refugee, you cannot apply directly; instead, you have to be referred by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), a designated referral organization, or a private sponsorship group. The above organizations will not refer you unless you fall into one of these following two refugee classes: Convention refugee abroad class If you are currently living outside of your home country and it’s impossible for you to return due to some well-founded fears of oppression based on your religion, race, political views, nationality, or membership in a certain social group, you are in this class. If you have enough funds that are necessary to support yourself and your family after your arrival in Canada, you can still be a convention refugee.As a convention refugee, you can be sponsored by: • The Canadian government. • A group of people or an organization. • A mix of both. Country of asylum class If you are currently living outside your country because of some civil wars or armed conflict in your country, or you had been denied basic human rights you are in the country of asylum class. Even if you have sufficient money to support yourself and your family after you arrive in Canada, you still belong to this category. As a country of asylum class refugee, you can be privately sponsored. Eligibility You will be considered eligible to make a refugee claim under this category if: You don’t have another stable resettlement offer from another country. The Self-Employed Persons Program is designed for those individuals who desire and are capable of becoming self-employed in Canada. Foreign nationals with self-employed experience as farmers, artisans, or athletes (at an international level) can apply for permanent residence in Canada through this program. However, self-employed foreign nationals, who want to live in Quebec are not eligible for this program and they have to apply under the Quebec Self-Employed Program.
