Self Employed Program
The Self-Employed Persons Program is designed for those individuals who desire and are capable of becoming self-employed in Canada. Foreign nationals with self-employed experience as farmers, artisans, or athletes (at an international level) can apply for permanent residence in Canada through this program. However, self-employed foreign nationals, who want to live in Quebec are not eligible for this program and they have to apply under the Quebec Self-Employed Program.
Are you eligible for Self-Employed Program?
If you are willing to move to Canada under this Self-Employed Persons Program, you must possess the following criteria:
- Relevant Experience
- Intention and Capability to be Self-Employed in Canada
- Meet the selection criteria
- Meet security, medical and other conditions
Relevant Experience
You know your experience is relevant if you have experience in managing an agricultural farm, being self-employed in athletics or cultural activities, or participated in athletics or cultural activities at an international level. Foreign nationals applying for permanent residence in Canada under this program must have at least 2 years of experience in the relevant field.
Intention and capability to be Self-Employed in Canada
Only because you have experience in relevant field for Self-Employed Persons Program, doesn’t mean you are eligible to apply. You must intend to be permanently Self-Employed in Canada. Besides, you must have the minimum asset to start your own business in Canada.
Meet the selection criteria
Once you meet the definition of a self-employed person, you will then be assessed based on the selection criteria stated in the following table. Out of 100 potential points, you must score a minimum of 35 points to become eligible as a Self-Employed person in Canada.

Meet security, medical and other conditions
Foreign nationals who are applying for permanent residence in Canada under this program must receive the Police Certificates and should go under a Medical Exam. In addition, they must have sufficient money so that they can support themselves, as well as their family after they get to Canada.
